Call for 'Move Over Law' following fatal collision involving Uxbridge officer

In moving news from Worcester County, tragedy struck early this morning, resulting in the loss of Uxbridge Police Officer Stephen LaPorta. Officer LaPorta was fatally struck by a tractor-trailer while assisting a motorist on Route 146. Uxbridge Police Chief Marc Montminy referred to him as a hero, explaining that LaPorta was fulfilling his duty to help others when the accident occurred. LaPorta, who had recently achieved his lifelong goal of becoming a police officer, leaves behind a grieving community, colleagues, and family, including his wife and 13-year-old child. The driver of the tractor-trailer involved in the incident sustained injuries and the motorist LaPorta was aiding was unharmed. The cause of the crash is under investigation, and authorities urge drivers to adhere to the Massachusetts 'Move Over Law' to ensure the safety of emergency personnel and others on the roads. Failure to comply with the law can result in a fine of up to $100.
