Blame placed on lane assist system for Romanian minibus crash

A survivor of the fatal minibus crash involving fans of Greek soccer club PAOK has shared concerns about the vehicle's lane assist system potentially playing a role in the tragic incident. The accident occurred on a two-lane road in Timisoara as the victims were en route to a Europa League game in Lyon, France. Uncertainty remains about the exact seating position of the witness within the minibus. Video footage of the crash depicts the minivan overtaking a tanker, then swerving into oncoming traffic and colliding with a truck. The survivor, currently in a Greek hospital, told Dr. Dimitris Koukoulas that the lane assist system seemed to have locked the steering wheel, hindering his ability to return to his lane post-overtaking. Lane assist technology aims to prevent unintentional lane departure by using cameras and sensors to detect lane markings, offering warnings or gently guiding the vehicle back into the lane. This technology generally disengages when turn signals are activated. Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the factors contributing to the accident. Dr. Koukoulas described the survivor as being in better condition compared to the other two injured passengers, who are experiencing mainly lower limb fractures. Meanwhile, relatives of the victims have started arriving in Romania to identify their loved ones.
