Big rig crash shuts down southbound 5 Freeway through Grapevine

A crash involving two big rigs has blocked traffic on the southbound 5 Freeway through the Grapevine Monday morning. The crash was reported near the Pyramid Lake offramp, just south of Smokey Bear Road in Los Angeles County, around 4:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The collision left the semis disabled across three lanes, prompting officials to issue a SigAlert and completely shut down the southbound side of the freeway at 5:30 a.m. “We know you’re down for the count at only 2 mph. That’s because all the lanes are blocked,” KTLA’s Ginger Chan said at 6:22 a.m. The closure was expected to remain in place until about 7:30 a.m. Drivers near the crash were attempting to get by through the center divider, raising hopes of a partial reopening sooner. “There is a chance they will release at least one lane,” Ginger said.
