Bicyclist dies in hit-and-run crash in Lehigh Acres, FHP searching for 2 vehicles
Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol and deputies from the Lee County Sheriff's Office swarmed a road in Lehigh Acres to investigate a deadly hit-and-run crash Friday morning.The investigation is taking place along James Avenue and East Fifth Street. Authorities were called to the scene just before midnight and are working to gather new information.The crash was originally reported as a hit-and-run crash with injuries by FHP, but was updated to "Fatality" status.FHP confirmed that a bicyclist was traveling westbound on East 5th Street and was hit by a vehicle. They added that the dynamics of the crash remain under investigation.The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries and later pronounced dead.A press release from FHP said that a post-collision, a witness saw an unknown gray sedan and unknown red SUV stopped in the area. Both vehicles drove away from the scene, the release adds. The gray sedan, FHP says, could be missing a hubcap and have a damaged headlamp lens.During their investigation troopers say they located a red Ford SUV with front damage at a residence in Lehigh Acres. The SUV has been impounded, and further forensic testing is ongoing to see if it was involved in the crash.A Gulf Coast News reporter on the scene saw a bike lying on the side of the road, its front tire mangled.A portion of James Avenue and East Fifth Street was closed at the time of the crash. It has since reopened.LCSO deputies located further down the street shared that they were there "for a suspect."
