Arrest made in Jefferson Parish fatal hit-and-run crash
ELMWOOD, La. (WGNO) — A woman is in custody as the result of a Jefferson Parish fatal hit-and-run crash investigation. Around 9 p.m. on April 22, Louisiana State Police detectives, along with the LSP Bureau of Investigations, began investigating the crash on Louisiana Highway 48 near Edwards Avenue in Elmwood. The investigation revealed, a man was walking across the westbound lanes of the highway wearing dark clothing, according to troopers, when he was struck by a Chevrolet Traverse also heading west. The driver reportedly left the scene while the 43-year-old man suffered serious injuries. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Through further investigation, detectives identified 47-year-old Veleka Dabney-Swan as the driver in the crash. She was arrested on April 23 and booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center on a charge of hit-and-run resulting in death. The crash remains under investigation as detectives continue to gather evidence and information. Troopers add that they are not releasing the victim's identity until the family is notified.
