Alpine head-on crash: 1 dead, DPS trooper seriously injured

ALPINE, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was seriously injured, and another driver was killed Tuesday morning in a head-on crash along U.S. Highway 67 east of Alpine, according to DPS. Officials reported that the crash happened about five miles east of Alpine in Brewster County and involved a DPS Chevrolet Tahoe patrol vehicle and a blue GMC Sierra pickup truck. The driver of the GMC Sierra was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the driver’s identity pending notification of next of kin. The DPS trooper sustained serious injuries and was flown by helicopter to a hospital in El Paso for treatment. A DPS K-9 was also inside the patrol vehicle at the time of the crash and was not injured, officials said. The cause of the crash has not been released, and DPS said the investigation remains ongoing. No additional information was immediately available.
