4 people, including 2 CHP officers, sustain ‘major’ injuries in crash after DUI suspect pursuit

Two motorists and two California Highway Patrol officers suffered “major” injuries in a crash after a pursuit in the High Desert on Thursday night, authorities said. The chase began around 8 p.m. when CHP officers tried to conduct a traffic stop on a 2007 Mercedes-Benz for a traffic violation on Hopland Street near El Evado Road in Victorville, the highway patrol said in a press release issued late Friday.   The driver, later identified as 23-year-old Cantor Yahancy, initially yielded but then fled, leading officers on a “brief” pursuit, the CHP release explains. It ended when the Mercedes, while traveling south on Cobalt Road, entered the intersection with Hook Boulevard and collided with a CHP unit going westbound.  “At the time of the crash, CHP officers were no longer actively pursuing the suspect vehicle," CHP stated in the media release. The site of the crash is three miles from where the traffic stop attempt took place. Yahancy, a Victorville resident, and an unidentified passenger suffered major injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment. The CHP unit going west on Hook Boulevard also had two occupants, both of whom were taken to a regional trauma center with major injuries, officials confirmed. They are expected to recover.  Yahancy has been charged with DUI causing injury and felony evading a peace officer. Per the media release, additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.   Anyone with information is asked to contact CHP by calling 909-806-2486.
