27-year-old dies in fatal crash on Maui’s Kuihelani Highway
MAUI, Hawaii (KHON2) -- A man is dead after a crash on Maui. Officials said on Thursday, May 14, around 6 a.m., a crash occurred on Kuihelani Highway near the intersection of East Waiko Road. According to Maui police, the driver was approaching the East Waiko Road intersection when he failed to slow down for traffic. Police said he hit the rear of a bus and became pinned underneath it. The driver, a 27-year-old Kahului man, was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died. The bus operator, a 61-year-old woman, was not injured. According to MPD, the man was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. This is Maui’s second traffic fatality of 2026, compared to nine traffic fatalities at the same time last year.
