24-year-old arrested after speeding pickup truck fatally hits 2 e-motorcycle riders in Sac County

Two e-motorcycle riders are dead after they were struck by a speeding pick-up truck in a suspected DUI crash in Sacramento County on Monday night, the California Highway Patrol said.CHP said said the two riders, both 20 years old, were hit by a Nissan Titan pickup truck around 9:15 p.m. in the area of Eagles Nest Road and Woodring Drive, just south of the Mather Golf Course. The riders were stopped at a stop sign and did not have helmets on when they were struck and killed, CHP said. Their identities have not been released. “They were actually stopped, per witnesses. They were stopped at the stop sign when the pickup truck was traveling at an extreme high rate of speed, lost control, ran them both over,” said Angie Monroe, a public information officer with CHP East Sacramento.Monroe said two male subjects ran from the scene into nearby fields. One was detained. The other was arrested at his house. He was identified on Tuesday as 24-year-old Jihvon Thompson. Thompson was being charged with two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter, two counts of felony DUI causing great bodily injury or death, one count of felony hit and run, and other DUI count. He was being held in the Sacramento County Main jai and bail was set at $550,000. He is next due in court on Thursday. CHP said the e-motorcycle riders and the people in the truck were known to one another.“We do have word from witnesses that all of these groups of young men were hanging out, possibly drinking together in the dirt fields a little further down, and that they're all known to one another,” Monroe said. “There's several different witnesses who all say that the truck was packed.”Two other people were also transported to the hospital. One person has major injuries while the second has moderate injuries, according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. It’s not clear if those two people were in the truck or another uninvolved vehicle that the truck clipped after it lost control. “It's disheartening to know that people feel the need to drive so recklessly when it's so senseless,” Monroe said. “So many lives are changed.”Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash.
