2 dead in wrong-way crash on North Carolina interstate
WILSON, N.C. (WNCN) — Two people died in a head-on crash along Interstate 587 in Wilson County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Troopers said they were called to the scene of a crash along I-587 at mile marker 31 just before 7:15 p.m. Monday night. When troopers arrived, they found two cars that had collided head-on. According to NCSHP, the driver of a pickup truck was heading westbound on I-587 before making a U-turn and driving the wrong direction on the interstate. As the pickup truck was driving the wrong direction, one car swerved out of the way and into the median. The people in the car that swerved into the median were not injured, according to troopers. At mile marker 31, the pickup truck collided head-on with a second car, according to state troopers. Both the driver of the pickup truck and the driver of the second vehicle died on impact. NCSHP said the eastbound section of I-587 was closed during the investigation, but has since been reopened.
