2 dead in fiery North Las Vegas semi-truck crash: police

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Two drivers are dead following a fiery crash in North Las Vegas on Thursday. The crash took place around 4:17 p.m. near Carey Avenue and Simmons Street. North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD) officers responded to the area of Simmons Street and Citizen Avenue in reference to a two-vehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle. Upon arrival, officers located both vehicles fully engulfed in flames. The North Las Vegas Fire Department and Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded and extinguished the fire. The preliminary police investigation indicated that a Dodge Challenger was traveling northbound on Simmons Street at a high rate of speed, while a Freightliner tractor-trailer was turning left from southbound Simmons Street into an industrial complex, crossing the northbound lanes. The two vehicles collided, resulting in a fire involving both vehicles, police said. Both drivers sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene, police said. Simmons Street is currently closed in both directions between Carey and Evans avenues. Due to the nature of the investigation, the roadway is expected to remain closed for several hours.
