2 dead, 3 teens injured in early-morning crash in Sacramento County

(FOX40.COM) — A crash near Scott Road north of Latrobe Road left two people dead and three teenagers injured early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol East Sacramento Area Office. CHP said that Sacramento County communications received an iPhone crash notification at approximately 12:29 a.m., prompting a response from CHP units. When officers arrived, CHP said its officers contacted fire personnel already on scene and were advised that the driver, a 16-year-old girl from Sacramento, and a 14-year-old girl from Wilton, were pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames, CHP said. Officials reported that the passing motorists were able to help three passengers in the rear seats escape the vehicle before emergency crews arrived. Responding units and fire personnel provided medical aid to the survivors. One passenger was transported to UC Davis Medical Center, another to Mercy San Juan Medical Center, and a third to Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center. Authorities said all three surviving passengers are teenagers, including two 16-year-olds and one 15-year-old. Investigators stated that they were able to obtain only limited information from the injured passengers due to the severity of their injuries. CHP officials said it appears that three of the four occupants attended Pleasant Grove High School. The identities of the two deceased individuals have not yet been released, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation. "This tragic crash is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly lives can change on the roadway," said Lieutenant Brian Maynard, commander of the CHP East Sacramento Area office. "We encourage all drivers to remain attentive behind the wheel, obey speed limits, and make safe decisions every time they drive."
