19-year-old charged with DWI in North Carolina crash that killed 2 people, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Two people have died and a driver is hospitalized in a single-vehicle crash late Saturday night in east Raleigh. According to the Raleigh Police Department, officers were called to a motor vehicle crash around 11 p.m. on the 400 block of South New Hope Road near Interstate 87. Officers said in a news release late Sunday morning that a Toyota RAV-4 struck two trees at high speed in the median and flipped onto the opposite side of New Hope Road. "Preliminary investigation indicates that a silver Toyota RAV4 was traveling northbound on S. New Hope Road at a high rate of speed while passing the Rogers Lane intersection. The vehicle traveled into the median and struck a small tree. The impact caused the vehicle to slide sideways on the driver’s side into a larger tree farther down the median. The Toyota RAV4 then struck the larger tree with the roof of the vehicle before overturning and coming to rest in the opposite travel lanes of S. New Hope Road." CBS 17 was there as police kept the area of the crash closed. Officers had the 400 block of South New Hope Road closed until investigators finished processing the scene around 7 a.m. Sunday. Officers said two people died from their injuries as a result of the crash. The driver, who police identified as 19-year-old Jonathan De Loera Olmos, was injured and taken to a nearby hospital for medical care. Officers said the driver has been charged with driving while impaired and felony death by motor vehicle as a result of this fatal crash.
