16-year-old boy dies in e-moto crash in Half Moon Bay
HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (KRON) -- A 16-year-old boy riding an electric motorcycle on the shoulder of Highway 1 in Half Moon Bay was killed Monday after running into a box truck, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded at 12:15 p.m. to Highway 1 at Terrace Avenue on the report of a collision. The 16-year-old boy was found suffering from serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The driver of the involved box truck remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation, the sheriff’s office said. According to authorities, alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the fatal collision. A preliminary investigation determined that the boy was traveling at a high rate of speed on the e-motorcycle before running into the box truck, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities described the bike as an electric off-highway motorcycle that does not have pedals. “This is a truly tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family, friends and loved ones of this young person,” said Sheriff Ken Binder. “Anytime a young person loses their life it sends ripples through the community. This tragedy reminds us how dangerous e-motos can be.” Binder is urging parents to talk with their children about safety and the rules of the road.
