11-year-old critically injured after alleged DUI crash at fireworks celebration
A 49-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after police said he crashed into a parked vehicle during Fourth of July fireworks celebrations, injuring three children and a young woman. According to investigators, Tyler Crouch was allegedly under the influence of THC and other drugs when he drove a pickup truck into a parked car, pinning an 11-year-old girl between the two vehicles. The 11-year-old, identified by a family friend as Maya Burton, suffered critical injuries and was flown to Primary Children's Hospital for emergency treatment. Sunday night, Maya's mother said Maya remained in critical condition and that her cousin was also in critical condition. She said no parent should have to see their child "smashed between two cars" and that the family will seek justice. Friends described Maya as a stellar student, a star athlete and a tremendous big sister. A GoFundMe was created to support Maya's healing. Police said two other children who were inside the parked car and a young woman were also injured in the crash. Their conditions have not been released. Court documents state Crouch has multiple prior DUI arrests. Officers were dispatched July 4 to 4400 Airport Road on reports of an auto-pedestrian crash involving multiple juvenile victims. Dispatchers were told the victims were pinned between two vehicles and that the driver was attempting to leave the scene. Police said multiple witnesses prevented the driver from leaving before officers arrived. Responding officers from the Ogden, Riverdale and Roy police departments, along with the Utah Highway Patrol, encountered a large crowd that had gathered to watch fireworks across the valley. Medical crews from Ogden, Riverdale and Roy responded and began treating the victims. According to investigators, the driver of a gray GMC pickup was attempting to leave the parking lot when the truck struck a white Dodge Charger parked in a stall. Police said the truck's front bumper hit the driver's side door of the Charger, pinning several juveniles who were standing near the vehicle. Investigators said the driver then backed up and attempted to leave. Witnesses surrounded the truck, banged on the windows and eventually broke several windows to stop the driver and gain access before officers arrived. Officials arrested Crouch at the scene, and the investigation remains ongoing. _____
