1 person dies in Naples as 14 vehicles get into 4 accidents due to heavy smoke on I-75.
A tragic car accident in Naples resulted in the loss of one life, injuries to three individuals, and the closure of both directions of I-75 for several hours on Friday morning. The incident, which also involved three other crashes, occurred around midnight on southbound I-75 in Collier County. Low visibility caused by smoke from prescribed burns and cloud cover contributed to the collisions. The chain reaction of crashes was initiated by a semi truck stopping in a travel lane due to the poor visibility. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the exact sequence of events. Fortunately, the three semi truck drivers and most of the passengers involved were unharmed. The victim who lost his life was a 52-year-old man from Madeira Beach driving a Chevrolet Pickup; his passengers, a 38-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy, were seriously injured. Additionally, the driver of an Audi, a 49-year-old man from Coral Springs, sustained minor injuries. Debris from the crashes blocked the southbound I-75 for nearly nine hours, while three other crashes on the northbound lanes near mile marker 95 caused further delays as law enforcement worked to clear the scene.
