1 dead after wrong-way I-196 crash near Douglas

SAUGATUCK, Mich. (WOOD) — A person died Sunday night after a crash involving a wrong-way car and multiple semi-trucks on I-196 between Douglas and Saugatuck, deputies said. Allegan County Dispatch was alerted to a wrong-way driver on southbound I-196 just after 11:30 p.m. While responding to the scene, officers with the Douglas Police Department spotted a serious crash near mile marker 39 involving the vehicle and two semis, the Allegan County Sheriff's Office said in a release. First responders were able to pull the wrong-way car's driver out of the wreckage and begin life-saving measures, but the driver died soon after. Neither of the semi drivers were injured, deputies said. They believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. Authorities are withholding the name of the driver until next of kin can be notified. Southbound I-196 remained closed at mile marker 41 for several hours Monday morning as officials investigated and worked to clear the scene. It reopened around 5:40 a.m.
