1 dead after shooting on I-71, coroner confirms; highway 'to be closed for hours'
A 22-year-old man had died after a shooting that shut down a portion of Interstate-71 for hours in Silverton Thursday. Shots fired on the highwayIt happened around 1:30 p.m. when police responded to a report of shots fired along northbound I-71 at Stewart Road. Someone in a vehicle fired at least one bullet, hitting a person in another car. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office confirmed one person was shot in a vehicle and was rushed to UC Medical Center. The Hamilton County Coroner's Office confirmed the person shot has died, identifying the victim as a 22-year-old man.Officials say there were two other people inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting.The sheriff's office says they do not know how many people were in the vehicle of the shooter. What led up to the gunfire remains unclear. Radio traffic details the moments after shots rang out:"North 71 to Stewart Road. It's a male outside of a vehicle saying he was possibly shot." "We just got another call stating that somebody shot at them."Highway reopens after several hoursThe highway reopened around 5:15 p.m. after being shut down for hours while officials investigated.Photos sent to WLWT as well as WLWT's Sky 5 drone camera showed the extent of the scene while the highway was closed.Police vehicles and an ambulance were seen near a red vehicle that had crashed into the fencing along the shoulder of the highway.
