1 dead, 1 arrested in suspected DUI crash in Pomona
One man is dead and another was arrested for driving under the influence after a car left the roadway and crashed into a tree on Santa Clara Drive in Pomona at about 7 p.m. Sunday, according to the Pomona Police Department. The black Subaru WRX was driving northbound on Santa Clara Drive near Calle Del Mar when the driver lost control, police said. The crash caused significant damage to the car. At the scene police found the driver, 47-year-old Jorge Abascal of Covina, outside of the car. The passenger, an unidentified 37-year-old man, was found in the back seat suffering from serious injuries. Police and Los Angeles County firefighters gave the passenger emergency medical care, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers suspected that Abascal was driving under the influence at the time of the crash. He was arrested and booked into the Pomona City Jail on charges of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The investigation is ongoing.
