Ybor City residents advocate for pedestrian safety improvements after fatal accident
Tampa city leaders are considering new safety measures in response to a tragic crash in Ybor City that resulted in the death of four individuals and injuries to several others. They recently held a town hall meeting, where District 5 City Councilwoman Naya Young, representatives from the Tampa police, transportation department, and Community Redevelopment Agency listened to residents' concerns, including family members of one of the victims, Sherman Jones. Some residents and families advocated for stronger actions, such as potentially closing 7th Avenue to vehicle traffic on busy weekend nights. City officials are looking into a variety of immediate and long-term changes, particularly focusing on high-risk areas in Tampa. Plans include adding a bike lane on Nuccio Parkway and 15th Street and improvements on Palm Avenue once federal funding is secured. The decision on closing 7th Avenue to traffic is still under consideration, with concerns about congestion and late-night activities being taken into account. Councilwoman Young intends to organize more community meetings to gather input and refine safety plans for Ybor City.
