Woman killed by reckless driver on Oregon highway, officials say

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A driver is accused of manslaughter after a head-on crash in Linn County claimed the life of a woman Saturday evening. Around 6 p.m., Oregon State Police responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 20 near milepost 21. Officials say early investigation found a Jeep Wrangler -- driven by 30-year-old Mariah Lopez -- was traveling westbound on the highway near Sweet Home when it crossed into the eastbound lane, hitting a Kia Forte head-on. The driver of the Kia, 69-year-old Karen Ramirez, was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. The Jeep had also been driving recklessly before the crash occurred, OSP said. After being hospitalized for minor injuries, Lopez was arrested for second-degree manslaughter and lodged at the Linn County Jail.
