Woman killed, 2 hurt in Hastings-area crash, police say

RUTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman died and two other people were hurt in a crash near Hastings Sunday morning, police said. It happened around 8 a.m. on M-37 near Fairview Drive in Rutland Township, according to Michigan State Police. A Ford Escape headed west on M-37 crossed the center line and hit a Jeep head-on, as it was headed in the opposite direction. The 59-year-old Hastings woman who was driving the Jeep died at the scene, police said. Her male passenger was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. They were both wearing seat belts, according to MSP. The 23-year-old Lansing man who was driving the Ford was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Police say he was not wearing a seat belt. MSP said drug use “may have been a contributing factor” but they are still investigating. M-37 was closed for about six hours after the crash but it has since reopened.
