Witnesses give testimony in court weeks following Las Vegas fatal 12-vehicle collision

Officials who were at the site of the tragic 12-car collision in November provided testimony before a judge during a preliminary hearing. Jose Gutierrez, 19, is believed to have deliberately caused the crash, driving over 100 mph at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Jones Boulevard on Nov. 18. The incident resulted in the deaths of Gutierrez's girlfriend, Adilene Duran Rincon, 20, as well as Edward Garcia, 38, and Vanessa Vasquez, 25. Charges suggest Gutierrez may have intentionally crashed into the cars in an effort to harm Duran Rincon. Witnesses in court described Gutierrez's vehicle as speeding and revving aggressively before the collision, and detectives estimate Gutierrez did not attempt to brake before impact. The testimony included details of a chaotic scene involving multiple vehicles and people of various ages. The intersection remained closed for 12 hours due to the severity of the crash. Witness Grant Black, a former police officer, recalled assisting victims following the collision, including providing medical aid to Gutierrez. Despite Gutierrez's claim of a seizure before the incident, a trauma surgeon stated there were no indicators of a seizure in his treatment. Following the hearing, Judge Lisa Luzaich ruled the case will proceed to district court, with Gutierrez's next court appearance scheduled for December 11.
