Winston-Salem police investigate fatal crash on US-311 to I-40 exit ramp

A crash on a highway exit ramp in Winston-Salem early Sunday left one person dead and has now led to multiple charges against one of the drivers, police said. The Winston-Salem Police Department is investigating a traffic-related death that happened at 1:59 a.m. Sunday, May 17, 2026, on the U.S. 311 to Interstate 40 westbound exit ramp. Police identified the vehicles involved as a 2013 BMW driven by Crystal Robles, 32, and a 2008 Toyota driven by Shawn Dereck Arthur, 54. Police said Karen Bibb Arthur, 36, was a passenger in the Toyota. Police said the department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. As a result of the investigation, Robles was charged May 27, 2026, with: Two counts of involuntary manslaughter Reckless driving, speeding Failure to maintain lane control Expired registration Police said Robles appeared before a magistrate and was issued a $500,000 unsecured bond. The investigation remains ongoing, and police said additional information will be released as it is confirmed and appropriate.
