‘We just saw the fireball’: 911 callers describe deadly crash in Las Vegas with victims trapped inside

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Good Samaritans calling 911 described seeing a "fireball" and rapidly-spreading flames after a crash that ultimately killed a Clark County School District special education teacher. Jeff Buchbaum, 55, was pronounced dead at the hospital after a crash May 22 near Boulder Highway and Desert Horizons Drive, just south of Russell Road. Police said 28-year-old Zachary Zwick drove at a “high rate of speed” and collided with the car Buchbaum was driving. His wife, Jennifer Boske, was also injured in the crash as a passenger in the car. She spoke with 8 News Now. Zwick was charged with two felony counts of reckless driving and was released from jail after posting a $10,000 bond, according to court records. "All I saw was a car coming and then an explosion," one male 911 caller told dispatch. "There's a car on its side. A car looks like it wants to catch on fire." The same caller said he saw "the car literally flip," and then said another person, a civilian, used a fire extinguisher on the fiery white sedan. Another caller seemed to indicate the extinguisher was not able to fully extinguish the car fire. "The fire is still not put out, by the way," one caller told dispatch. "We tried. They tried." In one call, where no one spoke directly to dispatch, people could be heard screaming amidst major commotion. "The vehicle is rolled over and one of the cars is on fire," a caller said. He went on to describe "people still inside the [car] that rolled over on its side," noting that people were trapped inside. Police were given a neighbor’s Ring doorbell video, which captured the crash. According to police investigators, the “impact was violent,” causing the minivan to “lift off the ground, and upon touching down, it immediately started to flip and roll,” police said. A fire ignited at the front of Zwick’s vehicle as it came to a stop. Detectives at the scene of the crash determined there were no braking tire friction marks from Zwick’s vehicle. The front tires on Zwick’s vehicle were “slightly burned and deflated,” police said. Zwick was charged with two felony counts of reckless driving and was released from jail after posting a $10,000 bond a day after the crash, according to court records. He is expected in court on June 23, according to court records.
