Virginia State Police investigating fatal crash in the intersection of Route 17 and Ella Taylor Road in York County
YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) -- A driver is dead after a crash at the intersection of Route 17 and Ella Taylor Road in York County Sunday morning, according to Virginia State Police. At around 4:45 a.m. on March 22, a trooper tried to stop a vehicle for reckless driving after going 99 mph in a 65 mph zone on I-64 East near the Fort Eustis exit. A chase began when the vehicle didn't stop. The vehicle left I-64 at the Fort Eustis exit towards York County. It then took Route 17 southbound. As the vehicle approached the intersection of Route 17 and Ella Taylor Road, it went off the right side of the road, struck a curb and then hit a tree. The trooper at the scene took the suspect out of the vehicle, which was beginning to catch on fire. The trooper started administering aid to the suspect, but they died at the scene. The driver's identity is pending notification of next of kin. As of around 8:53 a.m., all north lanes on Route 17 are currently closed. The south left shoulder, left lane, left center lane and right center lane are also closed. At 5:05 a.m., the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office announced on Facebook that the intersection of Ella Taylor Road and George Washington Memorial Highway was shut down due to a crash. The office advised drivers to avoid the area. It's currently unknown when the lanes will reopen. This crash is now under investigation.
