Virginia State Police Handle 240 Accidents During Winter Storm
Winter weather in Virginia led to 240 reported car crashes, according to the Virginia State Police. In the Hampton Roads area, there were 47 crashes, resulting in four injuries. Overall, 16 of the reported crashes caused injuries. The regional breakdown included 26 crashes in Northern Virginia, with two injuries and one fatality. The fatal crash did not involve winter weather and took place on I-496 near Backlick Road. In Central Virginia/Richmond there were 56 crashes with one injury, while Northwest Virginia/Winchester/Harrisonburg reported 16 crashes with no injuries. Central/Western Virginia/Appomattox saw 25 crashes, three with injuries, and Southwest Virginia had 34 crashes with one injury. Western Virginia/Roanoke reported 36 crashes, four with injuries. Virginia State Police reminded drivers to give VDOT trucks and emergency crews space to work during storm-related conditions, as delayed emergency responses could impact stranded motorists.
