Virginia experiences 177 accidents during winter storm: VSP

Editor's Note: We have updated this story with new details provided by Virginia State Police. Over the weekend, Virginia experienced a series of accidents due to the winter storm, resulting in one tragic incident. By 6 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, Virginia State Police had attended to 177 crashes statewide, which included 14 accidents causing injuries and one fatal crash in Northern Virginia. The fatal collision occurred around 8:24 p.m. on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County involving a tractor-trailer and a sedan. Despite the absence of precipitation at the time, officials have ruled out weather as a contributing factor to the crash. Investigations by the authorities are ongoing. Central Virginia witnessed 38 of these crashes, with one resulting in injuries. Between 9:30 p.m. on Saturday and 6 a.m. on Sunday, law enforcement responded to 117 crashes during the wintry conditions. In light of the situation, Virginia State Police are advising drivers to avoid traveling on Sunday and Monday. For those who must venture out, authorities recommend giving trucks and emergency personnel from the Virginia Department of Transportation space to carry out their duties on the roads. It's crucial for motorists to consider potential delays in emergency response times for stranded vehicles due to the storm's impact.
