Virginia Beach man arrested after fatal hit-and-run crash
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) -- A 48-year-old man was arrested in connection with a pedestrian-involved crash on Pacific Avenue that killed a woman on Thursday night, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department. Emergency Communications and Citizen Services received a call in reference to a crash involving a pedestrian in the 900 block of Pacific Avenue at approximately 9 p.m. Assisted by the Virginia Beach Fire Department and Virginia Beach Emergency Medical Services, officers responded to find 34-year-old Kathleen Bachand deceased in the roadway. A preliminary investigation determined that Bachand was struck and killed in a marked crosswalk by a vehicle that fled the scene. Officers later located the driver, 48-year-old John Peacock, in a nearby hotel parking lot. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with manslaughter and felony hit and run. Police said alcohol impairment is suspected in the offense. The investigation is ongoing.
