Vigil to be held for tourist who died in NYC horse carriage accident

MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Elected officials and animal rights advocates will gather in Central Park on Monday to hold a vigil in honor of the 18-year-old who died after falling from a horse-drawn carriage on Wednesday. The incident stirred controversy as community groups claim horse carriages should be banned in the city altogether, while workers who provide the service want to keep their jobs. According to police, 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan, who was visiting from India, died after falling from a carriage after the horse that was pulling it became startled.  The horse then bolted down West Drive while still attached to the carriage and carrying passengers. During the chaos, passengers were thrown from the carriage, including Mahajan, who later died. A vigil is set for 11 a.m., at which Council Member Christopher Marte is expected to announce the renaming of Ryder's Law to Romanch's Law in honor of the tourist who died. That law has been in the works for years, but has yet to be implemented. It would effectively ban all horse carriage services in the city and help workers transition into different jobs.
