Video shows crash moments before Kingsport murder suspect arrest
KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) - On June 4, around 5:40 a.m., law enforcement received calls about a car that had crashed in a yard on Potato Hill Road in Kingsport. The suspect was identified as 54-year-old Kevin Justis, who was arrested and charged with murder, along with several other charges, after a woman was found dead down the street from the crash. Kingsport resident Frank Crawford said around 5:30 that morning, he saw Justis on camera standing on the front porch of his parents' house on Potato Hill Road. He then drove over to see what was going on. "I pulled in their driveway and got out and walked around the house, and he kept walking around the sidewalk. So, I asked him, I said, 'What are you doing here?' He said, 'Well, I'm here to see Frank.' I said, 'Well, I'm Frank.' And then he looked at me real puzzled, said 'You, Frank?' and I said, 'Yeah.' he said, 'Well, I'm here to see you.' I said, 'What are you here to see me for?' He said, 'Well, to let you know, today's the day you die.'" Crawford said he then told Justis to leave. Video taken about 10 minutes later shows Crawford and his father talking to Justis, who is inside the car. "He backed up and he acts like he's going to pull out the driveway. And you can see in the video, like he does a burnout, you know, about 10, 15 feet, and then he slams on the brakes and puts it in reverse, and he tries to run over us." "He swings around, he hits my car and he ends up over in a flower bed. When he ends up over in the flower bed, the car dies. I went over there and dispatched the car so he couldn't, you know, walked over to the passenger side and, you know, gently told him that don't start car, don't get out." Crawford said he grew up with Justis but has not seen him in about a year and a half. "He had big long hair and covering half his face, had a beard and all that stuff, and I really didn't, I didn't recognize him till like, until the law told me what his name was." Crawford said he wants to warn people about these situations. "Don't open your doors. Get cameras, monitor, you know, and be safe and be careful. You know that's the biggest thing to put out there, and the reason I'm doing this is to let everybody know that it can happen to anybody in a split second." Law enforcement said calls about the crash came in around 5:40 a.m. Thursday morning. When law enforcement found out the vehicle was registered to an address on Glen Alpine Road, they went to notify the resident there. When they arrived, they said the body of Justis's sister, 59-year-old Lori Lane, was in the yard of the property. While law enforcement has not confirmed Lane's cause of death, they said she was hit by a vehicle. News Channel 11 did reach out to the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office on Monday. They said there are no updates and the incident is still under investigation.
