VIDEO: Person standing on L.A. freeway killed in wild overnight crash
A person who was standing in freeway lanes was killed in an overnight chain reaction crash caught on video. The Los Angeles Fire Department stated that the crash was reported around 1:56 a.m. Saturday on the westbound span of the 101 Freeway near White Oak Avenue in Encino. LAFD was not able to provide further details other than there being multiple cars involved and that at least one person was killed, but officials did say that the freeway was initially shut down. While the decedent was not identified, fire department officials said it was a woman; however, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Hines stated the victim was a man. Sgt. Hines, who spoke with KTLA at 7 a.m. Saturday, provided more details on the incident, explaining that multiple crashes occurred. "This started with a solo crash that caused the vehicle to be disabled in the number one lane," Sgt. Hines told KTLA 5's Jennifer McGraw. "A second vehicle came and rear-ended that vehicle, then a third vehicle immediately following that crashed into one of the parties and the first vehicle." Video obtained by KTLA shows two individuals standing next to their respective vehicles when the third car comes into frame; the motorist who was not struck appeared to have jumped over the center divider onto the other side of the freeway, narrowly avoiding a collision. According to Sgt. Hines, another crash occurred on the other side of the freeway around 5 a.m. Saturday, this one also involving a stalled vehicle. Sgt. Hines added that the crash highlights the dangers of getting out of a vehicle on the freeway, especially at night. "It's very dangerous and we would advise the public that anytime you are involved in a traffic crash, if at all possible, move to the right shoulder," he said. "And if not, in your vehicle with your seatbelt [buckled] is the safest place to be." As of 7 a.m. Saturday, only one westbound lane was open and the crash site had yet to be cleared; however, Sgt. Hines said at that time that the freeway would be opened "momentarily."
