Video: Driver watching YouTube crashes into California Highway Patrol vehicle

(KRON) – An alert officer with the California Highway Patrol narrowly avoided being struck by a distracted driver who collided with the back of a stopped patrol vehicle last week in San Mateo, authorities said Monday. The driver reportedly told CHP that he was watching YouTube videos and didn’t see the road flares or the patrol vehicle lights. The collision, which was caught on officer-worn body camera video, occurred on the night of March 3 while officers were working to clear the road after a three-vehicle crash on Highway 101. Road flares had been set up in the closed right lanes of the roadway, but CHP said an officer noticed the driver of a white pickup truck appear to disregard them, and stepped out of the way. The video then shows the truck slam directly into the back of the CHP vehicle. The driver of the truck was uninjured in the crash, according to the authorities. But CHP is using the incident to remind drivers to keep their eyes on the road. “Thankfully our officers had great officer safety awareness and were watching oncoming traffic!” CHP said.
