The incident took place on the northbound section of Highway 138 near Cajon Boulevard and the junction with the 15 Freeway in Phelan just before 6 a.m. Monday, as per initial details from the California Highway Patrol's incident log. A spokesperson from CHP Inland Division later confirmed that the crash happened at 5:56 a.m. and involved two big rigs and multiple other vehicles. The spokesperson indicated that several injuries were reported, with individuals being taken to nearby hospitals, although the exact number of victims and their conditions were not disclosed. A nearby worker described hearing a loud noise and seeing substantial damage to both trucks post-collision, with a black sedan crushed between them. Following the incident, only one northbound lane was open, and traffic was significantly affected, ultimately leading to a SigAlert being issued for the interchange between the 138 Highway and the 15 Freeway until at least 10 a.m. The cause of the crash remained unknown at the time of reporting.
