Vehicles collide on icy I-83 overpass in Baltimore
A crash involving numerous vehicles occurred on an icy Interstate 83 overpass in Baltimore on Sunday evening. According to a Baltimore City Fire spokesperson, around 20 vehicles may have been part of the accident at 29th Street and Druid Park Lake Drive. At least one individual was transported to the hospital. A driver who was involved in the crash mentioned to WJZ that she was attempting to merge onto I-83 South when she began sliding and eventually spun out, leading to other vehicles sliding towards her. She indicated that she was hit by approximately three or four other sliding cars. The wintry weather brought snow and ice to the roads on Sunday, with temperatures dropping throughout the night. WJZ's First Alert Weather Team predicted a flash freeze overnight, resulting in icy patches in our area on Monday morning, with early morning temperatures falling to the lower 20s and upper teens. These extremely cold temperatures could lead to icy road conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses. A spokesperson from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration informed WJZ that crews have been closely monitoring road conditions and spreading large amounts of salt across the state. The SHA spokesperson, Charlie Gischlar, mentioned that crews will patrol for icy spots after sunset and throughout the night into Monday morning due to the expected below-freezing temperatures.
