Renewed calls for drivers, pedestrians to be aware after fatal crash in Portland
As Portland Police investigate a deadly pedestrian crash in the city's Bayside neighborhood on Tuesday, advocates are urging drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to pay extra attention to their surroundings."Another pedestrian lost their lives and it didn't have to be this way," said Andrew Zarro, the director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine.Zarro's organization works to create safe roadways for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers across Maine.Portland Police are continuing to investigate and have not released any additional details or the cause of the crash, but Zarro said it is on drivers and pedestrians to ensure everyone is safe on the road."Really easy solution here. Drivers need to slow down. Speed is the biggest variable for impacting the likelihood of a bicyclist or pedestrian surviving a crash or not surviving, said Zarro.Portland is a city with a homeless population where some people are close to or on the roadways. Zarro said pedestrians also have to watch for vehicles as they navigate the streets."If you are a pedestrian in the crosswalk and you have the legal right away, do not assume that you are seen. I always tell people to make eye contact with the driver before they cross.
