Vehicle crashes into police department lobby, causing it to be buried
A driver was transported to a hospital after a vehicle crashed into the Shrewsbury Police Department on Monday afternoon. The incident involved a black 2022 BMW SUV that collided with the building at 2:02 p.m. A news helicopter observed the BMW's hazard lights activated inside the damaged structure. The area in front of the building was cordoned off with crime scene tape, and debris was visible on the ground. During a press briefing, Chief of Police Kevin Anderson described how the vehicle smashed through the front doors and into the dispatch area, causing great distress to the three dispatchers on duty at the time. The male driver of the BMW was arrested and subsequently hospitalized for injuries sustained. There were no passengers in the vehicle, and thankfully, no other individuals were hurt. Chief Anderson alluded to the possibility of the crash being deliberate, as the driver bypassed protective barriers and drove into the lobby and dispatch center. Despite lacking a clear motive, authorities mentioned previous interactions with the driver dating back to 2019. The driver is set to face charges at Westborough District Court the following day. While the lobby of the station is closed for now, the public can contact the business line at 508-845-1212 for non-emergency reports, while emergency calls should still be directed to 911. Plans are underway to set up a temporary trailer for dispatch services during repairs to the building. The police department assures that it remains fully functional, and the investigation into the crash continues.
