Van overturns, I-40 reopens after major crash near Garner
GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) -- At least one vehicle overturned in a Wake County wreck that closed westbound Interstate 40 near Garner for about two hours and backed up traffic for two miles on Sunday afternoon, officials said. The wreck was reported just after 3:20 p.m. along I-40 just west of the U.S. 70 exit and mile marker 305, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. All westbound lanes were closed just after the crash that appeared to involve a white van and another vehicle. Traffic was backed up well beyond U.S. 70, along with back-ups on the ramp from U.S. 70 to I-40. Two ambulances were at the scene following the wreck, and several officers and possible witnesses were gathered in the median Some traffic was able to move past the crash scene in the far right lane, and a second lane opened around 4:30 p.m. But back-ups were seen about two miles away at mile marker 207. There was no word about what caused the wreck or the status of anyone injured. CBS 17 has reached out to the Garner Police Department and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol for more information about the wreck. The highway reopened around 5:20 p.m.
