UPS to retire all MD-11 jets post deadly crash

Clifford Law Offices recently announced that the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 jet model involved in the tragic UPS accident in Louisville has been retired. This decision was dubbed as an example of “graveyard engineering,” signifying that corporations often avoid addressing faulty engineering until a loss of life occurs, as stated by Bradley Cosgrove, partner at Clifford Law Offices. UPS made this retirement announcement during its quarterly earnings call, revealing that the MD-11 constituted approximately 9% of its fleet. The crash on November 4, 2025, led to the groundings of all MD-11 planes by the Federal Aviation Administration, following preliminary findings by the National Transportation Safety Board indicating that the crash was due to the separation of the aircraft’s left engine and pylon from the wing. The investigation into the crash's cause is still ongoing. Cosgrove expressed his concerns, stating that large corporations like UPS often only take necessary actions to improve public safety after tragic incidents. The legal process is underway for those affected by the crash, and the retirement of the MD-11 serves as an important step towards ensuring the safety of air travel.
