UIW student athlete Sam Musgrave killed in car crash

SANGER, Texas - A 19-year-old University of the Incarnate Word student and National Guard member died following a vehicle crash that also left two high school students injured, officials said. Sam Musgrave, a 2025 graduate of Sanger High School and a track and field athlete at UIW in San Antonio, died at the scene of the crash, according to police and school district officials. The Sanger Police Department reported that officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident at approximately 10:25 p.m. Thursday, May 28. Three other individuals were transported to the hospital. Sanger police confirmed that one of the hospitalized individuals later died from their injuries, while a third passenger was released Friday. The Sanger Independent School District confirmed that all three individuals in the vehicle were cross-country runners. "This heartbreaking tragedy has impacted our entire school community," Sanger ISD Superintendent Tommy Hunter said in a statement. The district announced that counselors and support staff would be available throughout the week to assist students and staff. Musgrave had recently completed basic military training for the Texas National Guard and had just finished his first semester at UIW. "He had big dreams to run cross-country, own his own business, serve his country, serve his family, protect his family and protect his country," Musgrave's uncle, Evan Vasquez, told Fox 4 KDFW. "Unfortunately, that was taken from us." Vasquez noted that the family is still seeking answers regarding the circumstances of the crash. "We've tried to get closure," he said. "I think it's just been grief that's been added by the lack of answers and the lack of information." The UIW track and cross-country program paid tribute to Musgrave on Instagram, stating that his smile "lit up every room you entered." The university hosted a memorial Mass at Our Lady’s Chapel to honor his memory. "The University of the Incarnate Word community is stunned and saddened by the sudden loss of Sam Musgrave," UIW officials said in a statement. "Sam was a cherished member of our UIW family and a beloved athlete on our track and field team." A GoFundMe page established to assist the Musgrave family with funeral and memorial expenses had raised more than $18,000 by Monday, June 1, surpassing its initial $15,000 goal. Sanger police said the accident remains under active investigation and no further details are currently available.
