Two fatal crashes in Knoxville Thursday morning

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Two people died in unrelated crashes Thursday morning, the Knoxville Police Department said. Around 3:15 a.m., a car was going west on I-40 when it went off the road and crashed into the wood line for reasons that are under investigation, police said. The driver, a woman, was pronounced dead while the passenger, a man, was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with minor injuries. "Alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash," police said of the first crash. The second crash, which was unrelated, happened around 6:30 a.m. According to the preliminary investigation, a motorcycle was traveling on Western Avenue when a sedan pulled out from Matlock Drive into its path, police said. The motorcyclist, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene. "Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in that crash, and no charges have been filed at this time," police said of the second crash. KPD is investigating both crashes. The identities of the deceased are being withheld while police notify the next of kin.
