Two drivers suspected of impairment in deadly wrong-way crash on I-670
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The drivers of two separate cars are under investigation for possible impairment after one person was killed and two others were injured in an overnight, wrong-way crash on Interstate 670. According to the Kansas City Police Department, at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday, officers and medical personnel were called to the area of I-670 and Locust Street in the downtown loop on a reported crash with life-threatening injuries. Initial investigations revealed that a Kia Optima had been driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-670 and crossing all lanes of traffic when the driver crashed into a Chevrolet Avalanche driving westbound on the highway. Three passengers were in the Kia at the time of the crash. Two were taken to hospitals with life-threatening injuries. They are both reported to be in critical condition. KCPD says the third passenger was also taken to a hospital, but later died from their injuries. The driver of the Kia and the driver of the Chevrolet were both uninjured. At this time, the crash is under investigation, which includes the "suspected impairment" of both drivers, KCPD said. According to police, all lanes of westbound I-670 were closed in the downtown loop following the crash. They later reopened after about four hours. Authorities have not released the name of the victim who died. This is a developing story. Stay tuned to FOX4 News for the latest updates and information.
