Tuttle mother shares warning after firework accident causes life-changing injury
A Tuttle mother is spreading awareness on safety after a firework accident left her with severe hand injuries a week before the Fourth of July Holiday, Jessica Kies said the accident happened when a firework she was holding malfunctioned moments after taking it from her 7-year-old daughter. “Something in my stomach was like, you need to drop it,” Kies said. “But of course you don’t act that fast. It’s just an afterthought.” The second shot fired while it was still in her hand causing life-changing injuries, she said. “My pinky finger and my ring finger were completely gone. And the whole side of my hand was completely gone,” she said. She has since undergone multiple surgeries, including a recent skin graft. She said everyday tasks have become a new challenge as she adapts to her injuries. "Be very cautious and aware," Kies said. "Make sure you have a good distance between you and wherever your pop and fly works at. And just be safe Jessica hopes sharing her story will encourage families to think twice and practice firework safety before handling. The family has since created a GoFundMe to help the family with medical expenses since she did not have insurance.
