Trial to begin for woman accused in crash that killed two Marquette lacrosse players
The trial for Amandria Brunner, accused of driving intoxicated and causing a crash that killed two Marquette University lacrosse players, begins Monday at the Milwaukee County Courthouse. Newly released body camera footage from a private security guard captures the moments after the deadly crash near 27th and St. Paul last September. The footage shows the initial response to the scene, including a brief interaction with Brunner. The security guard, who responded before police arrived, did not want to be identified, and his voice has been distorted in the video. “They’re not okay?” Brunner asked in the footage. “No, they are not,” the security guard replied. “Actually, I was going this way,” Brunner said. Prosecutors say Brunner later admitted to driving under the influence. Court documents state her blood alcohol content measured .133, which is above the legal limit. She has remained in custody since the crash and faces charges in the deaths of 19-year-old Scott Michaud and 20-year-old Noah Snyder. The crash involved Brunner’s pickup truck colliding with a Jeep carrying Marquette lacrosse players. The body camera footage also shows Peter McColgan, a Marquette lacrosse player who was driving the Jeep. McColgan has been charged with two counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle, accused of driving more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit and attempting to beat a yellow light before the impact. Despite McColgan’s charges, prosecutors will need to convince a jury that Brunner’s intoxication was a substantial factor in Michaud and Snyder’s deaths. Brunner’s trial is scheduled to begin Monday at 8:30 a.m. If convicted, she faces up to 40 years for each count of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. McColgan, who is not currently in custody, is scheduled to make his first court appearance next month.
