Train crash victim died on wedding anniversary, inquiry told
During a fatal accident inquiry, it was revealed that in a train derailment near Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire on 12 August 2020, three individuals suffered injuries that were not survivable, resulting in their tragic deaths. Train driver Brett McCullough, 45, conductor Donald Dinnie, 58, and passenger Christopher Stuchbury, 62, lost their lives in the incident. The derailment occurred as the ScotRail service traveling from Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street derailed after encountering a landslide caused by heavy rain. The inquiry learned that Mr. Stuchbury was thrown clear of the train, Mr. McCullough's body was found on the lower embankment, and Mr. Dinnie's body was stuck in a coach doorway until the next day. Post-mortems indicated that the men suffered multiple blunt force injuries which were deemed non-survivable, likely resulting in immediate death. The families of the deceased expressed profound loss and grief in their statements, noting the irreplaceable presence of their loved ones. The emergency response to the incident was complex, with two firefighters sustaining injuries during the operation. An investigation found several factors contributing to the derailment, leading to a fine for Network Rail due to safety failings that were acknowledged. Steps have since been taken to enhance railway safety and resilience, with ongoing commitment to learning from the incident and supporting those affected. The fatal accident inquiry is scheduled to continue its proceedings, offering further insights into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
