Tracy Morgan recalls terrifying car accident with friends: 'His face was on his back'
In 2014, Tracy Morgan was in a car accident that put him in a coma and killed one of his friends. Now, he’s opening up about the harrowing ordeal. During an “Actors on Actors” video for Variety, Morgan and “Saturday Night Live” star Marcello Hernandez began discussing their mutual friend, Ardie Fuqua. “That’s my guy. He was in an accident with me,” Morgan said of the comedian. Morgan then explained what happened the night of the accident. “He was in a coma for 20 days. I was in it for 10 days and my assistant, Jeff, back in the day, was in it for five days,” he recalled. “But I remember we did a show together that night in Delaware and we got hit. That truck was doing like 65, 70 miles per hour with 85,000 pounds of frozen food in the back.” The “30 Rock” star continued, “And my friend, Jimmy Mack his neck was broke so bad his face was on his back,” referring to fellow comedian, James McNair, who died the night of the accident. At the time of the accident, Morgan was placed in a medically-induced coma and sustained multiple injuries, including a shattered femur, broken nose, a traumatic brain injury and several broken ribs, causing months of physical therapy and rehabilitation so the Emmy-nominee could walk and talk again, according to Us Weekly. Morgan sued Walmart, the owner of the truck, for the accident, and although the settlement is undisclosed, he hinted at a large payout. “You know why we do comedy? Necessity. But once you make it, then you surround yourself with people that need to do this as a necessity. You might not have no bills to pay, because you made it. But they got bills to pay, so they got to be funny,” he said. “I got hit by a Walmart truck, so with the money I got, I don’t need to do this. But I surround myself with people that need to do this and love it.” Follow us on Instagram @WeArePauseRewind for all your pop culture obsessions.
