Toddler killed after vehicle backs into Long Beach family sitting on front steps of building
The Long Beach Police Department said a toddler was killed and two others were injured a vehicle backed into a family sitting on the front steps of a building on Monday morning. It happened at 440 Maine Avenue around 11:30 a.m. Police received calls about a single vehicle collision involving multiple pedestrians. When officers arrived, they found three victims suffering from a multitude of injuries, Long Beach Police Lt. John Hotchkiss said. They were identified as a female adult, a female child and a female toddler. One of the responding police officers reportedly transported the toddler to the hospital in their patrol car. She later died from her injuries, according to police. The other two patients were transported to local hospitals, and police say they are in stable condition. Lt. Hotchkiss said a male driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The preliminary investigation shows that the pedestrians were sitting on the front stairs of a building when they were hit by a vehicle attempting to reverse. No further information is immediately available. The investigation is ongoing.
