Third deadly accident in a week occurs in Athens-Clarke County
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to its third fatal crash within a week, with the latest incident being a single-car crash at the intersection of North Avenue and Strickland Avenue. The driver, identified as Dejon Ellis, 53, lost control of the vehicle, veered onto the sidewalk, and hit a power pole, resulting in his death. The police did not mention any other injuries from the crash. This marks the sixth fatality in three separate crashes in the county this week, including a tragic incident on the Georgia Highway 10 Inner Loop involving a wrong-way driver and a crash at Barnett Shoals Road and Gaines School Road where a car collided with a Synovus Bank. Overall, there have been 10 fatal crashes and 14 deaths reported by ACCPD this year. The department emphasizes the importance of safe driving practices such as driving at appropriate speeds, staying attentive, and wearing seat belts to prevent further incidents.
