Teen faces charges in fatal Lehman Drive and North Academy Boulevard crash: CSPD

Previous coverage: Minor dies after serious crash at Lehman Drive and North Academy Boulevard. (COLORADO SPRINGS) — A teen boy is facing charges after the death of another minor and serious injuries to a woman and another teen following a deadly crash in late April at the intersection of North Academy Boulevard and Lehman Drive, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD). On May 20, officers obtained an arrest warrant for the teen boy, who is now facing charges in the other teen's death, as well as reckless endangerment. Police say the teen turned himself in later that same day. "At this point in our investigation, it’s estimated that the driver was going between 25 and 39 mph over the speed limit, failed to stop for a traffic control device, and violated restrictions associated with a minor driver's license," according to a press release sent to FOX21 News on Wednesday afternoon, June 3. The crash happened on April 22, just before 2:40 p.m., when police received several calls about the wreck. According to our previous reporting, the preliminary investigation showed that one car headed northbound on Academy was attempting a left turn at Lehman Drive while another vehicle, traveling at a high rate of speed, was heading southbound. "The southbound vehicle reportedly failed to stop for the red signal light and entered the intersection, where it collided with the turning vehicle," police said previously. The investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact CSPD at (719) 444-7000. People can also remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at (719) 634-STOP (7867).
