Teen dead, driver charged in deadly Wake County crash that sent pickup truck down I-540 embankment: NCSHP

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A man is facing charges in a Wake County crash on Interstate 540 over the weekend that left a teenager dead, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a 2008 Ford F-350 Super Duty pickup truck and a 2017 Dodge Charger were both traveling east on I-540 towards the Neuse River Bridge near Raleigh around 9:45 a.m. on Saturday when the F-350 suffered a blown tire. The driver of the F-350, 36-year-old Joshua Phillip Lewis, overcorrected and went into the left lane causing his vehicle to sideswipe the Charger. The F-350 then went off the left side of the road, hit the median guardrail, and overturned down a a steep embankment before coming to a rest on its top, according to the NCSHP. Troopers said the front seat passenger, a 13-year-old, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the NCSHP, Lewis was taken to WakeMed for treatment of his injuries. The driver of the Charger was no injured. Lewis is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and unsafe tires, according to the NCSHP. As of Monday morning, court records do not show if Lewis has been served his warrants or taken into custody. The crash remains under investigation by the NCSHP.
